As Savannah grew rich because of the cotton industry it was the Factor’s or the cotton merchants that became affluent. They managed getting the cotton from plantations to the railroads, to the port, to the ships, and finally to a port in england. Their offices were built on the backside of the cotton store houses that cover the main port or River Street for many blocks. There are three levels to Factor’s Walk, the area you now stand in, which is the lowest area, a second area that is a service street to the shops and restaurants on River Street and the top area that becomes the north side of Bay Street. The second level contains many smaller vaults and tunnels that lead to Bay Street that have been bricked up.
